Boston, the capital of Massachusetts and one of the oldest cities in America, has unique vibe that makes it an ideal city for engagement photography.  Boston is a compact walking city, with all of the major sites and photo location options nearby each other.  You can either plan your engagement session by choosing walkable destinations or simply hop in a cab or ride share to get from location to location. 

Boston Common

Boston Common, the oldest park in America, dates all the way back to 1634.  Bounded by Tremont, Beacon, Charles, Park and Boylston Street, this centralized photo location is a great place to start an engagement session. You’ll find paved walking paths and large patches of greenery, along with The Boston Common Frog Pond, which is a spray pool in the summer and an ice skating rink in the winter.   While thousands of locals and tourists visit this park every day, it’s large enough that you should be able to find scenes with little to no people in your background.

Boston Public Gardens

Boston Public Gardens, across the street from Boston Common, was established in 1837.  The Public Garden was the first public botanical garden in America.  This is the more manicured nature spot, with beautiful flower gardens available in the spring and summer.  Photo sessions here can incorporate big willow trees surrounding the pond and the beautiful bridges.

Charles River

The Charles River is another historic, iconic location in Boston that is perfect for engagement photography.   The 80-mile-long river gives you a beautiful view of the city skyline.  Consider ending your engagement session here if you are looking for blue hour or night time photos.

Beacon Hill & Acorn St

Right in the heart of Boston’s upscale Beacon Hill, Acorn Street is one of America’s most photographed streets.  As such, be sure to maintain a low profile during your engagement session, as the residents have been known to express frustration with the many tourists and photographers who visit.

The cobblestone streets and red brick facades make this area beautiful to photograph at anytime of the day.  Also, the narrow streets provide opportunities for shaded, soft light during most of the day.  Just a couple of blocks from Boston Common, you can easily squeeze this location in to a multi-location session.

North End – Little Italy

If you’re looking for more of a “lifestyle engagement” shoot, where the photos are based around an activity, you may want to consider The North End, the “Little Italy” of Boston. The most famous part of this area is Hanover Street, which has landmarks like Mike’s Pastries andModern Pastries.  Consider having your engaged couple indulge in a classic cannoli as the start of their engagement session!   This is the perfect area to wander around and get lost.  Beautiful backgrounds are everywhere, and you’ll discover plenty of nooks on the side streets of the North End!

Fenway Park

If you’re fans of the Red Sox, then the iconic Fenway Park is a must for your engagement photos.  You can reserve private tours so that you have plenty of time to explore the stadium with your photographer.  The highlight is the original wooden seats or on top of the Green Monster.

If you don’t want the full private tour, you can just stay outside and capture the exterior.  Wandering outside the park is free and can have some great views like the ticketing booth, outside of gates A or D, and the bars on Yawkee way.
