BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Chino Hills
Situated in Chino Hills, southern California, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a Hindu temple complex affiliated with the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha denomination of Hinduism. While the temple follows traditional Hindu practices, it welcomes individuals of all faiths. The complex, constructed in 2012, covers a 20-acre site and features a cultural center, gymnasium, classrooms, and a 91-foot lotus-shaped pond.
This Mandir is a noteworthy feat of engineering as it is the first earthquake-proof Mandir worldwide, designed to withstand earthquakes. Approximately 900 volunteers, including many second-generation Indian-Americans, contributed around 1.3 million man hours to its construction.
The Mandir also prioritizes sustainable energy by employing a solar power system that generates electricity and minimizes the negative impact on the environment. This solar panel system is expected to reduce 1,556 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting 62,244 trees, over a 25-year period.
