Hike to the top of Hawksbill Mountain for panoramic views! This 1.5-mile round trip hike has an amazing payoff with a valley below and Linville River 2,000 ft. down in elevation. But it’s worth every step when you reach your destination! On one hand, on a clear day, you can even see the skyline of Charlotte. Situated just about 90 miles away! However, the strenuous hike climbs about 700 ft. in elevation. So allow plenty of time for your adventure on this scenic path.

The main entrance to Kays Creek Park and the parking lot at Adam J Welker Trailhead offer many opportunities for picnicking, fishing in pristine waters or just hanging out with friends and loved ones.

The Wellsville Range is a perfect example of how the Wilderness Act of 1964 worked. By the late 1940s overgrazing and fires had left these mountains nearly void of vegetation. The wild mustang herds of the 19th century used to be corralled on the mesas near Dead Horse Point. They were herded in by cowboys and only had one escape route. It was in a narrow, 30-yard neck which was fenced off. After which, they are penned down for capture or sale into eastern markets. And this is where unwanted culls would find their way out. Also, one legend says that a band of broomtails were left corralled on the Point. The gate to their enclosure had been left open so the horses could return home. But for some unknown reason, they remained behind and died in sight with the Colorado River just only several feet below. Today, Dead Horse Point State Park is a place where you can enjoy stunning view for miles. This scenic attraction also has easy access thanks to its proximity from town as well!
Little Sahara Recreation Area (LSRA) is a cool 60,000 acres of sagebrush flats. It is also a juniper-covered hills located in Juab County. You can find free moving sand dunes here too! For OHV enthusiasts, the recreation area outside of Salt Lake City offers a perfect getaway with its 700-foot tall Sand Mountain. As well as low lying dunes for beginners, and the White Sand Dune bowls to challenge more experienced riders.
Visitors to the LSRA can enjoy hiking in its 6,000-acre Rockwell Outstanding Natural Area. Fat biking on the dunes and sandboarding or skiing down Sand Mountain are also available for visitors who want an adventure with nature close at hand! In addition, there are two children’s play areas available at White Sands Campground and the Jericho Picnic Area. Also, motorized vehicles are not permitted inside these spaces for safety reasons. It was a dry seabed spreading from horizon to horizon. And if you stood in Devils Garden, then the striking red rock features you see today would have been buried thousands of feet below your feet.
Also, the landscape slowly began changing when erosion took hold on these arid lands. Which led up into cracks between rocks where rainwater is collected, but also caused more soil particles through runoff. Eventually forming caves and gullies within some sedimentary formations. Water shapes this environment more than any other force. Rain erodes the rock and carries sediment down washes to finally fill up rivers like Colorado River, which is home for many animals in its natural habitats. All while still being one of America’s top tourist attractions!
