What inspired you to become a wedding photographer?
From an early age, my parents immersed me in the world of weddings, bringing me along to their friends’ joyful celebrations. I eagerly participated in my cousins’ weddings, taking on roles like ring bearer and more. When my family relocated to the United States, a friend approached me with an opportunity to work as an MC, igniting my entry into the wedding industry. Providing music and entertainment, I ventured into my own wedding business.
As my reputation grew, some clients began requesting packages that encompassed not only music and entertainment but also photography and videography. Intrigued by the art of capturing moments through a lens, I delved into research, and it was during this exploration that I reconnected with Jervy Santiago, an accomplished wedding photographer from my high school days. Witnessing the stunning images he crafted ignited a profound passion within me for wedding photography.
In 2014, I embarked on my first workshop with Scott Robert Lim, an experience that profoundly impacted my life. Under his guidance, I honed my skills and developed the confidence to embrace wedding photography as my full-time pursuit. This decision became even more significant when I got laid off from my previous full-time job. It was then that Scott Robert Lim bestowed upon me the courage to wholeheartedly pursue my dreams as a wedding photographer.
My inspiration stems from my genuine love for weddings and the beautiful love stories woven within each couple’s journey. The opportunity to witness and document these unique narratives has been an incredible experience. However, I acknowledge that the path to becoming a professional wedding photographer has been rife with challenges. Yet, I feel immensely blessed to be living my dream, fueled by my unwavering passion and the enduring joy I derive from this craft.
How would you describe your photography style?
My photography style can be described as creative wedding photography that emphasizes vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail. I strive to capture moments in a unique and artistic way, infusing creativity into every shot. By using a combination of composition, lighting, and artistic techniques, I aim to create images that stand out and evoke emotions.
Vibrant colors play a significant role in my photography style, as I believe they can enhance the overall mood and energy of a wedding. I pay close attention to post-processing techniques to ensure that the colors in my photographs are rich, and true to life. This approach adds vibrancy and depth to the images, making them visually captivating and engaging.
In addition to colors, I place great importance on capturing the intricate details that make each wedding unique. From the intricate designs of the wedding dress to the carefully chosen decorations, I make it a point to highlight these elements. By focusing on the small details, I aim to tell a comprehensive visual story that encapsulates the essence of the wedding day.
Ultimately, my goal is to create wedding photographs that not only document the event but also showcase the couple’s personality and the overall atmosphere of the celebration. By blending creativity, vibrant colors, and a keen eye for detail, I strive to deliver a visual experience that is both captivating and memorable.
How do you ensure that your clients feel comfortable and relaxed during the photo shoot?
Ensuring that my clients feel comfortable and relaxed during a photo shoot is a top priority for me. To achieve this, I encourage them to do an engagement session with me.
During the engagement session, I focus on capturing beautiful photos and building a rapport with the couple. It allows us to get to know each other better, establish a level of trust, and create a comfortable environment. I encourage open communication and actively listen to their ideas, preferences, and concerns.
Posing is an essential aspect of the photo shoot, and I understand that it can sometimes feel awkward or unfamiliar for couples. I take a hands-on approach to alleviate any potential discomfort by demonstrating poses and guiding them throughout the session. By physically showing them how to pose and offering clear instructions, I can showcase my expertise and instill confidence in their ability to follow.
I also encourage natural and candid moments during the shoot. I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere where the couple can be themselves and express their love and connection naturally. I engage in friendly conversation, crack jokes, and create a light-hearted environment to help them feel at ease.
Additionally, I emphasize the importance of taking breaks and allowing the couple to relax during the photo shoot. This helps prevent fatigue and allows them to recharge, ensuring they remain comfortable throughout the session.
By combining these approaches – conducting an engagement session, demonstrating poses, encouraging natural moments, and providing breaks -, I strive to create an environment where my clients feel comfortable, relaxed, and confident during the photo shoot. This ultimately leads to more authentic and beautiful photographs reflecting their love and personalities.
How do you ensure that you capture all of the important moments on the wedding day?
I rely on a team of second photographers who work alongside me to ensure that I capture all the critical moments on the wedding day. This team allows me to be in two places at once, ensuring no significant moments are missed.
Having a team of second photographers provides several advantages. Firstly, it allows for comprehensive coverage of the wedding day. While I focus on capturing crucial moments, emotions, and interactions with the couple, the second photographer can document other significant aspects simultaneously. This ensures that all key events and details are captured from multiple perspectives.
Effective communication and planning are essential for seamless coordination with the second photographer. Before the wedding, we discuss and outline a shot list, identifying crucial moments and locations that need to be covered. This ensures everyone is on the same page and each photographer knows their responsibilities.
During the wedding day, I maintain open communication with my team, constantly exchanging information about the progression of events. This allows us to adjust, anticipate moments, and ensure comprehensive coverage.
Additionally, I prioritize briefing the second photographer about my shooting style and preferences, ensuring consistency in the overall vision and aesthetic of the final collection. This helps to maintain a cohesive and unified result in the final photographs.
By utilizing a team of second photographers, I can effectively capture all the important moments of the wedding day, even when it’s physically impossible for me to be in two places simultaneously. This approach ensures that the couple receives a comprehensive and diverse collection of images that encapsulate the essence and significance of their special day.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day and why?
One of my favorite parts of the wedding day is when the bride gets to meet her parents. This particular moment is often filled with genuine and heartfelt emotions, allowing me to capture candid and deeply meaningful shots.
When the bride meets her parents before the ceremony, it is a culmination of anticipation, love, and support. It’s a time when emotions run high, and the connection between the bride and her parents shines through. The raw and unfiltered reactions during this encounter often result in beautiful and powerful images that tell a heartfelt story.
Witnessing the love, pride, and joy in the parents’ eyes as they see their daughter as a bride is truly touching. It’s a moment of celebration and reflection on the journey that has led to this significant day. As a photographer, I feel privileged to capture these authentic and intimate moments between the bride and her parents.
Photographing these interactions allows me to freeze time and immortalize the emotions that unfold. The images become a cherished reminder of the deep bond between family members and the profound significance of the wedding day.
Overall, capturing the bride’s meeting with her parents is a deeply meaningful and emotionally charged moment that holds a special place in my heart. It represents the love, support, and joy that surround a couple on their wedding day, and it is an honor to document these precious connections through my photography.
